The history of the dildo

Yes, the obsession with penises has been around for about as long as there have been men on the planet. We see it even in ancient buildings and cave paintings. So too we find dildos going back to ancient times. The oldest dildo found to date is from the Paleolithic era. The dildo was made from silt-stone. It appeared to have been highly polished, but whether it is from use or before being used, only the ancients could tell. The experts claim that the dildo may have been a religious relic, though the jury is out on that one. Maybe they just don't want to think about our ancestors getting it on? Moving along in history, all sorts of dildos made from bone and stone have been dug up. They have been found along with needles and combs, so we are pretty sure they were used for something other than religious rituals.

The Romans and Greeks did not hide their sexuality and males and females made use of dildos for mutual or personal pleasure. There were even huge phallus-like structures that were part of fertility rituals. Men that went off to war left their women dildos in an effort to keep them happy while their

men were off fighting. The Romans also invented the first double dildos. These were designed for use with a friend or during specific ceremonies. The Greeks used animal intestine and leather as softer coverings on the carved phalluses to try and make them feel smoother and more natural.

Chinese men, back in the day, used to have many wives, more than they could service regularly themselves. They devised various penis substitutes to use in masturbation. This was to help keep the women faithful and prevent them playing with each other. These were often made from fancy metals, with some even being hollow inside to release fluid to simulate ejaculation. While some cultures made use of bananas, gourds and plantains as short lived dildos, many cultures made dildos from various metals including gold and silver. Many of these were ornate and artistically designed and decorated especially those from the Renaissance.

In the early part of the 20th century rubber was discovered and many dildos were made from this flexible substance. There was a belief that women needed to be cured of a condition known as“hysteria”, which could be diagnosed for depression, tiredness, irritation or even just a headache. The cure was an“hysterical paroxysm” or as we know it today, an orgasm. Doctors used to cure this condition on a regular basis by hand, but this used to take up a lot of time. A new home appliance was designed by General Electric for hysterical ladies to use at home. Yes, it was actually called a home appliance. So the first vibrator was on par with your toaster or kettle. Silicone was the next step up in dildos and vibrator manufacture as it felt more natural, was firm and flexible, hypoallergenic and non-porous.

This also meant that lube could be used without it damaging the sexual aids. Today you can get dildos invarious shapes, sizes, materials and designed for all sorts of uses. Glass, rubber, plastic, silicone and more. So if your mother accidentally comes across your extensive vibrator or dildo collection, you can always tell her it is to cure hysteria.
